Basics for Soil Mix & Container Gardening

A common question that gardeners are asked is what soil mix to use. We have developed a soil mix that is ideal for clay soils. This mix has layers of fir bark, peat, compost and vermiculite, which provides the necessary organic materials to produce healthy plants. The advantage of using this mix is that it is highly soluble and mixes very easily. This makes it easy to apply to clay soils that are difficult to work with. Another advantage is that it is rich in nutrients and contains no nutrients that are dangerous to plants. If you’re using this mix for your vegetables or flowers, you can expect good growth results.

Some popular soil mixes for clay soils are those that contain compost, perlite, composted pine bark, and sand. If you’re just using the mix to cover vegetables or flowers and you don’t plan to grow anything from the soil, you don’t need to add any nutrients to it. The mix will consist of 10 parts sand, 20 parts pine bark, 20 parts compost, and 10 parts loam. This soil mix is ideal for planting vegetables, flowers, or fruit trees. If you are considering using chemicals for feeding your plants, you should research the chemicals and choose an organic fertilizer instead. The other day, I noticed that I left my watering can unattended in the cold kitchen window for 4 days. Then, the bucket of water on top of the can leaked out of the hole and onto the floor. I figured there must be a leak somewhere so I looked underneath the bucket. Instead of water, I found brown water. I removed the brown water and saw brown water sitting on top of the bucket. I removed that bucket as well. It was brown water on the floor. How on earth did that happen? How can water sit on the floor? If I had checked under the bucket, I would have known that it was brown water. I thought maybe the water level was wrong in the bucket and the brown water came from the can.

The reason why brown water comes from buckets is because the water drains into the bucket and sits for 4 days. When the bucket has no water in it, there is no air pockets in the water and the water remains brown. I guess this is why the water is brown. If you plan to plant in raised containers, you should build the containers up with concrete or something to allow the water to drain. The only place for water to remain in containers is in the bottom of the container.

Water can stay in buckets for days if you don’t check the water in the buckets. But in this day and age with automatic watering systems, it really doesn’t matter. The point is that you should check the water in the buckets. If it’s not wet to the top of the bucket, then you probably have air pockets in the bucket. You can try shaking the bucket lightly, if air pockets are still there, then it’s not too flooded.

If the bucket is too dry, simply fill it with water until it is completely saturated. However, if the water in the bucket is too hot, there is most likely a leak someplace. If the bucket is very wet, drain it and refill it with water until the water reaches the bucket’s bottom. If that doesn’t work, spray the bucket with a nozzle at least three times until the water is completely gone.

Don’t ever leave your plants in a tub of water, no matter what the guidebook says. Just don’t do it. It’s just asking for trouble. Water your plants by hand to wet the soil. If you water the soil by hand, it’s guaranteed that you’ll have a muddy root mass. It’s one of the most critical things you need to know in plant growing, and it’s the most neglected in plant growing. I’ve listed some alternative methods below.

If you have a very large container, then you should raise the container up slightly using screws. You can also install a float. This is where you use a plastic sheet to soak the soil with.
